Joy in The Midst of Trials

James 1:2–8
James tells us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” At first, that can sound difficult to understand. How can we have joy when we are going through pain, uncertainty, disappointment, or struggles? James isn’t telling us to be happy about the trial itself. He is reminding us that our joy is bigger than our circumstances. We can have joy in the middle of the trial because we know who Jesus is, what He has done for us, and where we are going. This life is temporary, but our relationship with Jesus is eternal. Because we have placed our faith in Him, we have the hope of eternal life with Christ. That means our greatest treasure cannot be taken away by a difficult season. The trial may be painful, but it does not change the promise of God.
James says that the testing of our faith produces perseverance. Sometimes God uses the very things we wish He would remove to strengthen our faith and draw us closer to Him. And that brings us to something important: our desire for Jesus. Trials have a way of showing us what we truly need. When everything is going well, we can become comfortable and forget how much we need the Lord. But when we walk through difficult seasons, we discover that Jesus is not just someone we worship when life is good—He is the One we need every single day.
Our prayer becomes, “Jesus, I need You. Give me strength. Give me wisdom. Help me trust You. Help me become more like You." James tells us that if we lack wisdom, we should ask God, and God gives generously. So when you don’t understand what God is doing, ask Him for wisdom.
When you feel weak, ask Him for strength.
When you feel discouraged, draw closer to Jesus.
And when the trial seems too heavy, remember this: the trial is temporary, but Jesus is eternal.
Our joy doesn’t come from having a perfect life. Our joy comes from knowing that Jesus has saved us, Jesus is with us, Jesus is transforming us, and one day we will be with Him forever. So don’t let the trial steal your desire for Jesus. Let the trial drive you deeper into Him.
Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep seeking Him. Keep your eyes on eternity.
Because whatever we may face in this life, we have something this world can never take away—the hope of eternal life with Jesus Christ. Jesus is worth pursuing. Jesus is worth trusting. Jesus is worth everything.
