Insecurity - The Best Way is The Slow Way

From Pastor Kevin King

This Rock Report is different than what I usually do. Usually, I will have a scripture that I feel God led me to, and I write from that. This time I only have a thought that He dropped in my heart during praise and worship one Sunday. I was speaking, and when I first get in the pulpit, I like to take a minute or two to settle in by making a comment about the weather or something else fairly random. This Sunday, I explained the thought that He shared with me.

It goes something like this: People that are insecure can sometimes feel inferior and lower than everyone else, seeing themselves as less than those around them. The Lord shared with me, while praising and worshiping, that there are two main paths to fixing this plight pride and learning who we are in Christ. Pride is the quick and easy route because it doesn’t take any time for me to start to exalt myself above everyone around me. It doesn’t even have to be real. I can find some way to think I’m better than everyone else and, therefore, feel like somebody, feel like I’m on their level. This way is quick, and I can do it in an instant. Problem solved. The problem with this solution, other than that God hates it, is that there will always be someone else out there who will be better, stronger, wealthier, funnier, and better looking than you. Once you cross paths with this person, you will once again feel less than, inferior. You will have to come up with another way to feel good about yourself or double down and exalt yourself even more than before. This way is temporary because it relies on comparing yourself to everyone around you. Remember, there will always be someone else.

The second way to overcome insecurity is the learn-who-you-are-in-Christ-Jesus way. Learn what God thinks about you, and learn to like you for who God made you to be. This way is much slower than pride because it takes time and you must overcome old beliefs about yourself. But, it’s more permanent because it’s based upon the opinion of your Creator and what He says about you. He made you and knows all about you. He loves you like you are because He made you. He thinks you're awesome. With those beliefs, you live in peace and like being you. It’s like this: no matter how hard you try to convince me my name is not Kevin, you will never succeed. I know my name. Period. Likewise, once you know your name, if you know what I mean, nobody can convince you otherwise.

That’s how God wants it. Throw away the old quick-fix-pride way that works until someone else comes around. Remember, there will always be someone else. Take the time to ask the Lord to show you who you are and what He thinks about you. It’s the slow way, but it’s the best way. It’s permanent.
